Compassion for Yourself and Others: A Journey Through the Heart Chakra

Updated: Apr 30

Dear reader,

Last month we explored the solar plexus chakra, also known as manipura. Today we turn our attention to the energy point just above it: the heart chakra – the center of feeling, compassion, gentleness, and from which we can connect with ourselves and the world around us.

When you're feeling lost... try listening to the voice of your heart.

Trauma-Informed Listening to the Heart

Many people carry traces of stress or trauma, whether visible or invisible. These experiences can influence how energy flows through the heart. Your system might be extra alert, as if constantly scanning the environment for safety. A understandable reaction is to 'dim' feelings or distract yourself to avoid feeling.

In this post, you won't find rules or obligations – only invitations to notice, with gentle curiosity, what your heart wants to tell you.

Anahata – Unstruck

Anahata is translated from Sanskrit as "unstruck" or "constant." The rhythm of our physical heart is continuous and faithful; it beats day and night without conscious effort. Take a moment to ask yourself: can you feel compassion for your body and everything it quietly does for you? Think about the millions of automatic processes that keep you alive – from lungs absorbing oxygen to cells repairing themselves while you sleep.

What Is Your Heart Telling You? Do you ever place your hands over your heart? Perhaps you listen to the rhythm of your physical heart, but your energetic heart also communicates with you.

If you feel comfortable exploring: gently place your hands over your heart area. Feel the warmth of your hands. Notice what happens in your body. Is there tension? Relaxation? Perhaps you don't notice anything special, and that's perfectly fine too.

What might this center be trying to tell you? You can't think your way out of an emotion, but you can try to feel what's there, without judgment, and allow it to flow through you when that feels right. There's no 'correct' way to do this - whatever works for you is perfect.

The Gentle Protection Around Your Heart

It's important to recognize that protective mechanisms around your heart – such as reluctance to open up – can be wise adaptations. They may have helped you through difficult times. If you notice a certain hesitation to allow emotions in, know that this is okay. You don't need to force anything. Compassion begins with respecting your own boundaries and pace.

Ho'oponopono - an Exercise in Self-Compassion

Forgiveness can take place when we acknowledge our resentment and choose to soften it a bit. Of course, this is a process that cannot be forced; what matters most is that it feels right for you. This Hawaiian mantra, sometimes also called a prayer, can help soften any resentment you might carry – toward yourself and perhaps others as well.

For this exercise, find a comfortable place and sit or lie in a position that feels good to you. You might want to play some soft music in the background. As an option, you could place your hands over your heart or let them rest just above.

You can experiment with these four sentences, which you can repeat softly to yourself or aloud, to the rhythm of your breath:

I'm sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you
I love you

Sometimes this exercise brings up emotion – like a burden you were unconsciously carrying. That's completely natural. You can repeat these sentences for as long as feels good, or perhaps set a timer for 3-5 minutes. There's no 'right' way – trust what feels good for you.

Small Gestures of Self-Care for the Heart Chakra

If you'd like to explore practical ways to nourish your heart chakra, here are some suggestions:

Color: Heart energy is often associated with green. You might seek out nature to surround yourself with this color, wear green clothing, or carry a rose quartz crystal – a stone often associated with the heart and (self)love.

Small moments of gratitude: If it feels good, you might notice something each day that you're grateful for. This doesn't need to be anything grand – the warmth of sunlight, the taste of a cup of tea, or a friendly glance from someone on the street.

Self-care moments: What brings you a feeling of softness and care? This can be as simple as taking a moment to breathe calmly, taking a warm shower, or looking out the window at the sky. Try to engage in these small self-care 'rituals' more often to connect with the energy in your heart.

An Invitation

In the coming weeks, if it feels right, I invite you to occasionally reflect on your heart chakra. What lives in this center of feeling and connection? There's no rush, no pressure to do this 'correctly.' Every small step in connection with your heart is valuable.

Feel free to share your experiences with me. Or do you have questions about a trial yoga class or energetic session? Email info@studiotreeoflife.nl.

I wish you a wonderful day!

With warm regards,
